A barrage of injections or a nasal spray

The first part of the treatment will either involve a daily barrage of injections or nasal spray containing a hormonal drug. This drug will suppress your menstrual cycle so that your fertility specialist can induce ovulation when it comes time to collect eggs from the ovaries. At this point, one of the IVF side effects is a feeling that you are experiencing menopause.

Moving to the next phase

The next part of treatment is the stimulation of the ovaries so that they will release multiple eggs. In this stage, you may experience pain in the abdomen and some bloating or discomfort in the area. After which, the eggs will be removed from your ovaries manually. You will be given a local anaesthetic for the procedure because a long hollow needle is inserted through the top of the vagina. Severe cramping may follow soon after.

The final stage – implantation

Once viable eggs have been identified, sperm will be added in order to fertilize them and turn them into embryos. What follows soon after is implantation, in which you may feel side effects like cramping and/or bleeding. The worst case scenario after going through this is an ectopic pregnancy, which is when the embryo implants outside your uterus and pregnancy is no longer viable and must be terminated. Symptoms from this include severe pain, bleeding, nausea and vomiting.
